Dr. Samantha Balboa, vocalist and teacher, serves as Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. She teaches Applied Voice to music performance, music education, church music, and music business majors, as well as Vocal Pedagogy, Vocal Literature, and directs the Opera/Musical Theatre Ensemble. In addition to her teaching duties, Dr. Balboa also serves the music department and university by coordinating large-scale productions, such as our Ensemble Showcases and A Very Mary Hardin-Baylor Christmas Program.
Dr. Balboa is an active performer of many genres, including both classical and contemporary styles. Some recent performing roles include: Desirée Armfeldt (A Little Night Music), Dido (Dido and Aeneas), Marcellina (Le nozze di Figaro), Erste and Zweite Dame (Die Zauberflöte), and Ottavia (L’incoronazione di Poppea). She also enjoys work as a chamber musician and often presents recitals of works written for voice, viola, and piano, alongside her husband, Ruben. Recently, the two were selected to present a program of lesser-known works for this instrumentation at the American Viola Society Festival. Dr. Balboa has won several awards and competitions in singing, including the UNT Concerto Competition, the David Daniels Concerto Competition, and the Matilda Dodge Wilson Award for vocal excellence (Detroit, MI).
