Divine Writing - English Major

Since graduating in 2016 with a double major in English and Christian Studies, Jake Raabe has co-founded a publishing company called Patristica Press and published his first book, . He’s currently a graduate student at Baylor University, working on a master of divinity, and a freelance writer, penning a bi-monthly column for the Baptist Standard. He’s also a contributor at Think Christian and his work has appeared in Christianity Today. He says the best part about attending Â鶹ÊÓƵ was the mentorship aspect. “I probably spent almost as much time in professors’ offices discussing things we were studying or personal life situations as I did in the actual classroom.â€

What is special about studying a degree in english at Â鶹ÊÓƵ?

Students graduating from the Â鶹ÊÓƵ English program boast a 99% passing rate for the English TExES (teacher certification exam) and a 90%+ placement rate for students applying to graduate programs.

English students have ample opportunities to publish their prose, poetry, and scholarly papers during their time at Â鶹ÊÓƵ. Each year the department publishes the Baylorian, a student-produced literary journal with over a century of publication. The annual Windhover Writers’ Festival allows students to hear and work with recognized professional writers and creative artists. The Undergraduate Research Program gives students the chance to present their scholarly research at Scholars Day programs each semester and conferences such as the Baylor Symposium of Faith and Culture.

The English Club sponsors literary festivals (Poe and Shakespeare), book club gatherings, game nights, and opportunities for community service throughout the school year.

The Professional Development Track of the English Program includes 3-semester hours of career preparation/professional attainment via an introduction to the major, an internship, and a capstone experience. These practical hours allow students the chance to gain hands-on professional experience before they graduate
